I love teaching “practice contractions” in my pregnancy yoga classes.
It’s worth the initial giggles and looks of confusion, because practice contractions…
⭐️ experientially teach the mind and body that there is intensity, and there are breaks, moments for rest and recovery.
⭐️ help us learn the patterns of our minds in response to discomfort… what kinds of thoughts flood our minds? What coping mechanisms do we already have?
⭐️ increase physical strength and stamina.
⭐️ deepen our mental strength, our belief in ourselves.
⭐️ are an opportunity to practice different techniques (e.g. various types of breathing, sounds, movements) so we begin to get an idea what works for us, and what we might tap into when it’s the real thing.
⭐️ tune us into the collective power of others practicing alongside us, the collective power of pregnant and birthing people everywhere.
This is all AMAZING practice for the intensity of labor and birth. And not just natural, vaginal births…
Cultivating all this knowledge and power and body-led wisdom serves us during the challenges of pregnancy, in the anticipation and experience of scheduled inductions and C-sections, and in those wild post-partum days and months.

Yoga illuminates different ways of living and being.
Capitalist, racist, sexist, ableist society implicitly and explicitly asks us to love, make decisions, and exist in certain ways.
I don’t find many of these ways make me feel good, make me feel like me, or allow me to feel the magic everywhere around me - but, yoga.
Yoga gives me a framework, concrete tools and practices, inspiration, good feelings and more.
Couldn't do life with this much love and power if it weren't for yoga ✌️

I guide pregnancy yoga for such a range of bodies and people, many of whom are experiencing aches, discomforts, and other complications.
When you're hurting or stressing or unsure, it can be tough to get your butt to a yoga class.

I've seen time and time again how people find relief, relaxation, solace, softness, pleasure, power, community, connection, and more in yoga.

In no particular order:
1. Modern medicine does have a place in pregnancy and birth, but in most cases, we’ve got it wrong.
2. Pregnancy can suck, be uncomfortable, or even be riddled with very real complications and challenges. But I’ve experienced in myself and witnessed in others how yoga (and other modalities) can provide AMAZING relief from aches, discomforts, fears, and common pregnancy symptoms.
3. Some women experience pain free births. That may not be most of us, but there are ways to work with the intense sensations other than what modern medicine has to offer. Hello again, yoga 😉
4. We get to choose if and how modern medicine supports us throughout pregnancy and birth.
5. We get to choose how we move, how we breathe, how we powerfully call in the love and support that we deserve.
6. We get to f*king choose 😎.
Aaaand doing yoga during pregnancy is the practice that you need to make decisions from a place of love and power and instinct.
Love. Power. Instinct.
Yep, those could be the defining things of your pregnancy and birth.

We get to do this how we want.
We get to live how we want, mother how we want, spend our time how we want.
Also: financial pressures, structural inequalities, sexism, lack of support, trauma, health issues, and every other challenge and form of suffering under the sun.
It's the wildest dance...
Acknowledging the barriers we're up against, but not being defined by them.
Giving ourselves grace for our perceived shortcomings, but not holding ourselves back from trying.
Feeling exhausted and overwhelmed and under-supported, but still finding so freaking much freedom and power and transformation in motherhood.
Yup, that's me 🥹
I can get 2 hours sleep, and still teach a phenomenal yoga class.
I can solo parent for 3 days, and still tend to my own needs, too.
I can fail and struggle and fall apart, and forgive and love myself in the process.
I feel this free and powerful because of the way I support myself with yoga.
The way I'm in tune with my body and my emotions. The practices for self-regulation. The teachings on love, impermanence, and purpose.
I share yoga, because I want this freedom and power for us all! ✨⚡
